![]() ![]() It was interesting to see the different barges being loaded and unloaded along the way and hear about the different bridges. The captain and a park ranger gave a lot of interesting history and information about the Arch and the history of St Louis. It wasn't at all crowded and we could move around. We enjoyed the one hour cruise on the river. The grounds around the Arch are beautiful and would be fun to walk the area. About 10 minutes to look out the windows and take pictures. The tram ride up was fun and worth the cost of the ticket. ![]() We enjoyed looking at the pictures and artifacts and reading some of the history. There is a very nice and interesting museum that's free under the Arch. Also purchased parking at the nearby garage online for $9. I bought tickets in advance for the tram to the top and a one hour riverboat cruise after. We brought a 12 year old to visit the Arch. You can forget you are in a city and you get great views of the Arch in different settings. Take time to walk the park around the Arch. The Gateway Arch is a symbol of the US’s expansion Westward, and St. I highly recommend it as a park visit.īe sure to get your tickets on line at least 30 if not 60 days before your visit. The two national parks we visit on this trip are within larger cities, and are not the type of remote wilderness you first think of with sites in the National Park System. If you do that, you will have a great time here. My feeling in every park is don't compare, just enjoy. With that said, I truly enjoyed this as an amazing place. I know a lot of NP visitors discount this as a Junior Park, not worthy of the status provided to places like Yellowstone, Yosemite or Grand Canyon. Truly my hike around GANP was as nice as any hike and the views were just as amazing, not to mention the ride up to the top of the Arch was so unique. In many ways it has all the attributes of a National Park wrapped up in 91 acres. It has great wooded trails, a lake with wildlife, birds and squirrels, a river, the mightiest in the country, historic structures like the Courthouse, a great viewing spot on a man made mountain and one of the best Visitor Center museums within the NPS. However, as I commenced my morning walk before visiting the Arch, I realized it was still a National Park. However, in the middle of the 20th largest MSA in the US, within sight of skyscrapers and only a 2 block walk from my hotel, you can not be more urban than this park. In my quest to see all 63, this summer brought us to the urban parks in the Midwest. The smallest and most urban National Park in the country is a still a National Park and it is every bit has great to visit as any other park. ![]()
